They argued that academics and the media need to do a better job educating the public about the real risks of victimization rather than sensationalising individual crimes if overall crime trends are declining.

Maynooth criminologists respond to recent media coverage of assaults in Dublin city centre.
Dr. Wozniak and Dr. Marder caution that recent media coverage could be evidence of a growing ‘moral panic’ that overestimates the real risks of victimization, and they summarize cross-national evidence that ‘zero tolerance’ policing tactics were not as effective as many politicians and commentators believe.
