The concept of ‘Spain’ is ever-changing and triggers a wide range of responses, both positive and negative, from different quarters. Introducing students to different perspectives on Spain, this module begins with the so-called ‘Disaster’ of 1898 and continues through to the 1993 General Elections. Running along this timeline, students will explore key texts and events to engage with different histories and politics, including but not limited to: colonialism, memories of conflict, women’s and LGBTQ+ rights, the bourgeoisie and working class, as well as underground radical politics. We will also look at vibrant cultural outputs, particularly football, songs, art, and films, and then contextualise them as part of a response to wider socio-historical, economic, and political upheavals. Students will also engage with the evolving perspectives on Spain from different ‘peripheries’, including the Catalan Countries, Euskal Herria, Galicia, and the Maghreb (namely the Western Sahara and Morocco).
