Inequality is increasing throughout the world, including in so-called advanced economies. Of all the regions of the world, however, Latin America is the most unequal. Using the region as an example, this module asks: What impact does inequality have on the quality, depth and stability of democracy? To answer this question, we will identify, examine and evaluate the extent of inequality in the region, propose some possible causes for the region’s high level of inequality, assess the economic, political and social impacts of that inequality and show how these have affected the quality and stability of the region’s democracies. We will also explore some of the ideas and policies Latin Americans have proposed to help reduce inequality and so boost democracy. Finally, we will identify and discuss what we can learn from Latin America to help protect and nurture our own democracies. Students taking this module, therefore, will not only learn about inequality and democracy in Latin America, but also about how inequality can impact democracy in general.
