The aim of this module is to develop a solid understanding of the principles of Physical Optics and give the students an introduction to modern optics including the principle of lasers, fibre optic technology and other applications such as holography and polarisation.
Optics: Interference, Young's double slit experiment, phasor addition of waves, multiple slits, interference in thin films, Michelson interferometer; Diffraction, single slit, circular aperture, resolution, diffraction grating, spectral resolution; Polarization, Brewster's angle, law of Malus.
Lasers: Principle of operation with outline of various types of laser and related application, introduction to Einstein coefficients, Q-switching, laser modes and analysis of laser light output
Fibre Optics: Basis of operation, single versus multi-mode operation and introduction to telecommunication system,
Holography: Basic principles, experimental arrangements and modern applications
Polarisation: Basic principles, polarising techniques with examples and modern applications
This module specifically addresses the following topics of the Core of Physics, as defined by Institute of Physics:
- Interference and diffraction at single and multiple apertures
- Dispersion by prisms and diffraction gratings
- Optical Cavities and laser action
