Biography

Anthony is an Associate Professor in the School of Education, Maynooth University. He is Programme Leader for both the Future Leaders programme (Year 2 – M.Ed. ELM) and the TL21/M.Ed. (IL) programme.

He holds a PhD and two first class Honours Master degrees. He undertook PhD studies in University College London and studies for an MA in Copenhagen, Denmark.

He led significant curriculum design, reform and implementation at Maynooth University and was Course Leader for the PGD in Educational Leadership; the PGD in Education; the M.Ed. and the M.Ed. (School Leadership) programmes and the Professional Master of Education (2 year) programme.

He was recipient of the Maynooth University President’s Award for Teaching and Learning (2022). The award “acknowledges the efforts of outstanding individuals that contribute to excellence and innovation in teaching and learning across the university and enhance student learning.” In July 2023 he was awarded a prestigious CTL Fellowship. He has also been awarded an Irish Research Council Research Ally award.

He is research active and was PI, (Senior) Co-investigator, etc. on a number of funded international research projects such EDURAD: Educational Responses to Extremism (ISF-P Funded - http://edurad.eu/); Learning to Disagree (EU funded - https://www.euroclio.eu/);  Salam (Ireland) Research project (Qatar Foundation International funded - The https://cmhcr.eu/salam/). Teaching and Learning for the 21st Century programme (TL21), which he leads, was shortlisted for the "Best Education Outreach Award" in the National Education Awards (2024). It has been referenced across national policy documents, including more recently the Teaching Council’s Cosán framework and CSL’s “Learning to be a School Leader.

Anthony served on several University boards including the University's Governing Authority, the Academic Council and the Faculty of Social Science Teaching and Learning Committee. He was also one of five members on the University's Curriculum Commission Implementation Committee and was HEI representative to the Teaching Council, Ireland (2018-2022).

Anthony was a member of the national School Placement Working Group which supported the work of the Teacher Supply Action group. He was also expert panel member of the Professional Development Advisory Group, on the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. He also served on the National Steering Committee, which established the first second-level Educate Together School (ETSS) in Ireland.

Research Interests

Anthony has particular research interests in the following areas: teacher education and professional development, schools as active research communities, democracy in action, responses to  curriculum innovation and pedagogy, multiperspectivity, and the history of education policy.
