MA CREOLE: Cultural Differences and Transnational Processes

A Joint Master Programme in Social and Cultural Anthropology at 6 European universities

CREOLE is an innovative two-year Anthropology degree (120 ECTS), funded under the EU SOCRATES Programme, in which students are required to spend two of the four semesters at one or more European partner institutions. There are seven participating universities: The National University of Ireland, Maynooth (Ireland), Universität Wien (Austria), the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (Spain), Université Lumière Lyon 2 (France), the Univerza v Ljubljani (Slovenia), Universitaet Bern (Switzerland) and Adam Mickiewicz University (Poland).

This unique Master Degree will allow you the opportunity to study and analyse multiple complex societies, deal with cultural diversity, transnationalism, visual and popular culture.

The CREOLE MA places its graduates in an excellent position to pursue a wide range of international careers. The experience of living and working in at least two different linguistic settings of Europe equips graduates to communicate well in the context of social and cultural diversity, while the completion of a field-based original research project provides them with analytic and problem-solving competencies that are highly valued in both public and private sectors. Students might pursue careers that deal with migration, visual and popular culture, cultural heritage, or international policy, and might work in internationally oriented NGOs, government organizations, international organizations at the European or global level, or international business.

How does the programme work?

Normally, Maynooth University students complete 60 ECTS worth of taught modules in their first year at home in Maynooth. For their second year, students visit at least one of the partner universities where they must carry out original research and submit a thesis. For the thesis, students identify their primary supervisor at the home university (MU) as well as a co-supervisor at the partner university they visit.

There is also an Intensive Programme (IP) which takes place every year between Semesters 2 and 3 – normally in July – where all students from all partner universities come together for learning, teaching and networking in one of the 7 partner universities.

Do I need to speak a foreign language to do this course?

The programme’s main language is English. Proficiency in the language of the proposed partner institution (French, German, Spanish, Polish, or Slovenian) is desirable. Further, Creole students may wish to immerse themselves in at least one other local language while attending the host institution.

Selecting your MA Thesis Advisor at Maynooth University

Students should identify one of the permanent members of staff in the Department of Anthropology. At the beginning of each academic year, a presentation is held by the anthropology teaching staff allowing students to make contact and establish supervisory links with staff members.

Selecting the Partner University & Thesis Co-Advisor

Students should aim to determine which of the 8 different participating universities they would like to visit as early as possible in their first year of study. Note, each university has different guidelines and dates regarding registration as well as the procedure for selecting a supervisor. Each university has a designated Creole contact person as well as a Creole Local Assistant. The student should initiate contact with these people in the university they would like to visit. Both the Creole Coordinator and/or the Local Assistants will be able to provide all the necessary information regarding their university and the supervisor selection process as well as registration dates/deadlines, courses on offer as well as more practical matters including accommodation and living expenses.
