The Royal Irish Academy Committee for Geography acts as the National Committee for Geography in Ireland and is the major point of contact in Ireland for the International Geographical Union (IGU). This website is intended primarily as a reference source for materials relating to the IGU and contains archived documents, announcements, useful links and anything else which it is felt may be of interest. Information on some of the other activities of the Academy Comittee for Geography are reported on the Royal Irish Academy website.

Information received from the IGU is circulated to the Irish geographical community by various means, one of the more effective being the Ireland-Geog email list. Readers wishing to receive news as it arrives are strongly urged to sign up to the Ireland-Geog list. (N.B. To subscribe to Ireland-Geog, send an email message to Listserv@Listserv.heanet.ie containing only the following text: Subscribe Ireland-Geog@Listserv.heanet.ie firstname lastname - e.g. Subscribe Ireland-Geog@Listserv.heanet.ie Joe Bloggs).

The IGU was established in 1923. It adheres to the International Council of Science (ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC). The IGU is governed by an executive committee which is elected at a delegate conference usually held in conjunction with the International Geographical Congress which is organised every four years by the IGU. Much of the work of the IGU is conducted by 34 Commissions and 4 Task Forces which tend to be organised on a thematic basis. These Commissions carry out a range of activities, including the organisation of international conferences and the production of newsletters to keep geographers informed of developments in their specialisms around the world. All geographers are urged to make contact with the Commissions in their areas of interest.

The Academy Committee for Geography is immensely proud of the fact that one of its members, and a former Chair of the National Committee for Geography, was President of the International Geographical Union (IGU) from 2000 to 2004, and a Vice-President from 1996-2000 and 2004-2008. Whilst President, Professor Buttimer presented the IGU’s Planet and Humanity award in 2002 to Nelson Mandela in recognition of his immense and selfless contribution to the welfare of humanity.
