Welcome. The study of philosophy has always been strong at NUI Maynooth, since the foundation of St Patrick’s College in 1795. Initially, philosophy as a subject was taken as preparation for the study of theology by students for the priesthood, but with the opening up of St Patrick’s College to lay students in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the study of philosophy has been considerably broadened to include a plurality of ideas, topics and approaches.
This approach has been continuing in NUI Maynooth which has been an independent institution since 1997. It is reflected today in the academic interests of staff members, both of the recent past and present. All philosophical traditions and its history are present in the currently taught curriculum including: Ancient Greek, Medieval-Scholastic, Renaissance, Modern, Analytic and Contemporary Continental Phenomenological approaches.
Fáilte. Tá an fhealsúnacht ina gné láidir de thraidisiún Ollscoil na hÉireann, Maigh Nuad, ó bunaíodh Coláiste Phádraig i 1795. I dtús ré an Choláiste sin, rinneadh staidéar ar an fhealsúnacht mar chuid den chúrsa diagachta, ach ón uair a osclaíodh Cláiste Pádraig do mhic léinn nach mic léinn cléiriúla iad go déanach sna 1960í agus ag tús na 1970í, leathnaíodh réimse an chúrsa fhealsúnachta trí smaointe, topaicí agus cineálacha cur chuige eile a chur san áireamh.
