| Key Issues: |
Over the past decade or so, Ireland has undergone rapid transformation of its social landscape with new wealth, new immigration, massive transformations of the housing market that has led to new communities and related questions of delivering services, cross-border peace and reconciliation processes, alongside continuing issues around poverty and health. An important element within the policy arena has been the notion of social capital and quality of life. This programme aims to develop insights into forces that promote (as well as those that inhibit) the development of social capital and trust; defining, measuring (and ultimately promoting) healthy communities; understanding process of alienation and integration at the local, regional, and national levels; understanding general quality of life issues, including perceptions of risk, life chances and various understandings of connections to (as well as barriers between) various communities and the broader society. |
| Programme Mission: |
Communities are at once spatial realities, such as neighbourhoods, and conceptual entities, fundamentally informed by the many ways a sense of belonging is produced, disputed, maintained, or denied. They are potential reservoirs of social capital and trust, but they can also be the efficient causes of anxiety, even fear. Finally, the concept of “community” has emerged as one of the main means of imagining governance in the modern nation-state. We aim to research “communities” in as comprehensive a fashion as possible using the wide variety of disciplinary expertises and viewpoints in this group. We also aim to effectively disseminate our findings to those involved in producing policies and initiatives aimed at promoting and strengthening communities. |
