Projects
| Project Title: |
The Meaning of Success: Young Women, High Achievement and the Development of Social/Cultural Capital in Rapidly Developed Areas. A Comparative Study of Contemporary Semi-Rural/Rural Vermont and Ireland. |
| Supervisor: |
Dr. Deirdre Kirke and Dr. Rebecca King-O’ Riain |
| Project Abstract: |
A comparative international study on young women’s high academic achievement in rural/semi-rural Leinster (Ireland) and Vermont (USA) this project analyses the way academic achievement is conceptualised as cultural and personal capital between the two geographic locations, delving into the effects globalization, capitalism and rapid economic development have had on rural young people and communities. This qualitative research project attends to the contentious links between place, identity, status reproduction, out-migration, familial and peer socializing processes and conceptualisations of the role of knowledge/skills within the wider economy. Ultimately this work hopes to provide data for informing future educational and community development policies and planning structures in the efforts of creating sustainable communities and infrastructures on both sides of the Atlantic.
This project is funded by NIRSA and is under the auspices of the ISSP.
