Project Title: Migrant Families in Ireland: Transnational family formations and identities
Supervisor: Dr. Mary Gilmartin
Project Abstract:

Located within the poststructuralist tradition in Geography, this study deconstructs migrant understandings and lived experience of family life in Ireland, post-migration. The core question at the heart of this study is: what are the impacts of migrating to Ireland on families? Participant generated photographs are used as a window to the everyday family life of migrants, making it possible to abstract the particularities of the everyday to create a better theoretical understanding of the complex everyday life of migrant families. It is envisaged that this study can contribute to the growing literatures on family and home in cultural geography, as well as to knowledge of the family context of migration in transnational studies. In addition, this study can contribute to the growth of visual geographies, by drawing on work in anthropology and sociology, and developing their methodologies for the geographical imagination.
