Project Title: A comparative ethnography of industrial agriculture and farmers' political strategies in Almería (Spain) and Monaghan (Ireland)
Supervisor: Dr. Séamas Ó Síocháin and Dr. Chandana Mathur

Project Abstract:

This project will argue that an understanding of political dynamics is the best way to understand how an agrifood commodity chain works, and how it changes over time. To this end, and through the lens of the concept of quality standards, this project will examine the relations of power between farmers, agricultural workers, suppliers, marketers, retailers, consumers, creditors, and government officials in the Irish mushroom industry, Ireland, and the Almerian horticultural sector (Spain).

This is project is funded (2004-2007) by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and the Social Sciences.
