Irish Social Sciences Platform PhD Scholarships

The Irish Social Sciences Platform (ISSP) is a collaborative initiative funded by the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions (PRTLI) which supports research on the social, cultural and economic transformation shaping Ireland in the 21st century. The National Institute for Regional and Spatial Analysis (NIRSA), which embraces researchers from the National University of Ireland Maynooth, the Institute of Technology Sligo, Mary Immaculate College Limerick and Queens University Belfast, is a founding partner of the ISSP. NIRSA is now inviting applications from suitable candidates for a number of PhD scholarships funded as part of the ISSP programme. These are available at three separate locations;

Scholarships are valued at €16,000 (index-linked) per year for a period of three years. Additional remuneration may be available from part-time teaching/research work within host departments. In addition, fees are fully paid in the case of students from EU member states. Students from outside the EU must pay a supplementary fee of €4,617 per annum, with the exception of the scholarship offered by the National Centre for Geocomputation (NCG) at NUI Maynooth (see below), in which case the supplementary fee will be paid by the NCG itself.
Applicants should have a good undergraduate degree and, preferably, a masters qualification or comparable postgraduate work experience. It is anticipated that successful candidates will take up their scholarships in September 2008.

One scholarship is available at the National Centre for Geocomputation (NCG), NUI Maynooth in the following research area:
- GIS, spatial modeling and spatial statistics.

NIRSA and the NCG (which share the top floor of the John Hume Building at NUI Maynooth) will provide successful applicants with desk space, office and computing facilities, travel funding, research training and a supportive work environment. In return, PhD scholars will partake in the full life of the institutes, including attending training courses and institute events and providing assistance in the organisation of institute activities. Successful applicants will be registered with an appropriate academic department within NUI Maynooth. Scholarship offers are subject to the availability of an appropriate supervisor and the approval of the relevant university department.
Institute of Technology Sligo
One scholarship available in the following area:
- Design, innovation and business development: This scholarship will be based in the Institute’s Centre for Design Innovation and will involve research on the role of design in business innovation and performance. Applications welcome from all disciplines, but particularly from design, business, sociology and anthropology.

Mary Immaculate College, Limerick
One scholarship, based in the College’s Department of Geography, available in the following area:
- Spatial strategies for balanced development, with particular reference to urbanisation and regional development; polycentricity, clustering and inter-urban complementarities on the island of Ireland; and population deconcentration, rural restructuring and sustainable commuting.
