"The amenity principle: The causes, incidence and implications of amenity-led rural settlement in Australia"

Dr. Neil Argent is Associate Professor of Geography in the School of Behavioural, Cognitive and Social Sciences at the University of New England at Armidale, New South Wales, Australia. Dr. Argent’s main research interests are in the fields of rural geography, demography and development. Key themes in his research have included the impact of financial deregulation and bank closures on rural communities; the impact of changing population densities on social interaction patterns in rural communities and the social and economic viability of rural settlement systems; and the planning implications of amenity-led rural settlement in Australia.

Dr. Argent will be based in NIRSA as Visiting Fellow from July 9 to August 1. The focus of his research while at NUI, Maynooth will be the sustainability of rural communities - an Irish/Australian comparison, with particular reference to rural service provision and demographic change.
