"Theorizing scale in human geography: the recent debates" 

Presented by Prof. John Paul Jones III.

John Paul Jones III is Professor and Head of Geography and Regional Development at the University of Arizona. His work has developed along several lines over the past 20 years. One trajectory weaves a long held interest in the history of geographic thought and geographic methodology, with a focus on spatial science and the spatial contextualization of regression models. In a related vein, he has spent over a decade working on various topics informed by developments in critical social and cultural theory, especially poststructuralism. This work has examined issues of representation and identity, gender and race, and spatial ontology and epistemology. Over the past 20 years, Professor Jones has published 6 edited books and over 80 articles and book chapters. He was editor of the /Annals of the Association of American Geographers from 1996-2000, and has supervised over 20 PhD students to completion.

Abstract

Th masterclass will draw on recent work by Professor Jones, Professor Sallie Marston and Dr Keith Woodward that argues for a flat ontology of scale.
