Globalisation - the widening, deepening and speeding up of global interconnectedness - is among the major processes shaping contemporary Irish economic and social development. The aim of this research group is to carry out dedicated research and to create a website for interrogating the reciprocal relationships between Ireland's evolving indigenous socio-economic structures and the influences exerted by Ireland's growing immersion in the web of networks associated with the globalisation process. An important element in this work will be the pursuit of transnational and cross-cultural studies that will place the Irish experience of globalisation in a comparative international context. The Globalisation, Democracy and Governance website will bring together the work of this research group which is dedicated to the examination of emerging tension related to political identity, representation and governance which globalisation processes are generating at different spatial scales - local, urban, regional, national and supra-national. Particular themes to be explore din this context include the sustainability of emerging forms of socio-economic development and the creation of appropriate forms of participatory democracy which challenge prevailing power structures. |
