A one million strong grass roots activist organisation dedicated to human rights, the freeing of prisoners of conscience, women’s human rights, to gain fair trials for political prisoners and to ending torture across the world.

Armed Conflicts Report

A very useful and comprehensive report on ongoing conflicts around the world by Project Ploughshares. Includes major and lesser-known conflicts in easy to use format.

CAIN (Conflict Archive on the Internet Project)

The CAIN website provides a wide range of information and source material on ‘the troubles’ in Northern Ireland from 1968 to the present. Material is divided into a number of sections and is regularly updated.

Centre for Post-Conflict Studies, Oxford

To help resolve the disorganised and ill-planned programmes dealing with post-conflict situations in the post-Cold War era a number of academic and practical disciplines came together to establish this centre. Sections include Modus Operandi, Research Projects and Links.

Centre for the Study of Global Governance

Based at the London School of Economics (UK), this Centre focuses on civil society in the context of global governance. Includes a Balkans Reconstructions Observatory and a Transition and Reconstruction Programme in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

Colombia in Crisis

Set up by the US based Inter-Hemespheric Resource Centre, this is a new site predicting that US policy in Colombia is leading to a new Vietnam quagmire. Includes a Global Affairs Agenda and Progressive Responses.

Democratising Globalisation

A project of the NIGD (Networking Institute of Global Democracy) following up on the UN’s democratisation reports (1995-7) focused originally on Russian and Eastern Europe but now with a broader remit.

Ethnic-L Roster

This is an interactive list of organised groups, associations and centres interested in promoting research on ethnicity, nationalism, migration and related problems.

Foreign Affairs

A US guide to international affairs on the Internet.  Not too many critical sources but otherwise very comprehensive.

The Global Compact

This site is maintained by the United Nations Global Compact Network with sections on Human Rights, Labour and the Environment. The overarching theme is democratisation.

INCORE (Initiative on Conflict Resolution and Ethnicity)

An Ulster University initiative dating from 1993 addressing the management and resolution of the growing number of ‘ethnic’, political and religious conflicts across the world.

International Affairs WWW Virtual Library

Part of the World Wide Web Virtual Library collection.  An extremely comprehensive and well-organised electronic resource.

International Crisis Group (ICG)

The ICG is a private, multinational organisation committed to strengthening the capacity of the international community to anticipate, understand and act to prevent and contain conflict.

International IDEA (Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance)

IDEA’s main priority is to assist in the formulation of a more coherent international response to conflict by promoting peace and democracy. Believes that civil society should play a key role in shaping the peace and democracy agenda.

Institute on Global Conflict and Co-operation (IGCC)

Since 1983, the IGCC and its partners have been committed to conflict resolution through international co-operation. By supporting research from a multidisciplinary platform, IGCC has been on the frontline of many innovative solutions in international democratisation processes.

ISN (International Relations and Security Network)

The ISN is conceived of as a one-stop-shop in the field of international relations and security.  Contains an annotated links library and specialised fact databases.

Jane’s Defence

A military establishment source on ongoing military conflicts around the world. Focused quite a lot on military hardware it is, nevertheless, well informed on the whole.

Journal of Democracy

Since its inception the Journal of Democracy has become an influential international forum for scholarly analysis and competing democratic viewpoints. Selected articles available free online.

Jump Start (South Africa)

A comprehensive guide to South African and African online resources hosted by the informative Weekly Mail and Guardian (Hotlink). There are commented lists of links with political parties and trade unions, local government and independent sources.

Latin American Network Information Centre (LANIC)

This is the WWW virtual library of Latin American studies.  It is a comprehensive country by country and topic by topic gateway into Latin America. Ample material on democratisation and conflict resolution.

Oneworld.net

A campaigning organisation with sections on for example, the WTO in Seattle, debt relief, biosafety and so on. Dispatches, partners and links are well covered.

Palestinian Development InfoNet (links to Middle East Peace Project)

Extensive resources on the Middle East peace process. Includes email discussion lists, resources and a variety of links.

Peacebuilding Links

An exceptionally comprehensive set of links in peacebuilding created for a specialist course at McGill University (Canada). From early warning through demilitarisation to post-conflict reconstruction.

Peacenet

Billed as 'Connecting people who are changing the world'.  A well-established activist network with useful links and resources.

Platform: The European Platform of Social NGOs

A broad forum of NGOs committed to ‘civil dialogue’ at the EU and global level. Also advocates a legally enforceable bill of civil, political, social and economic rights. Good links.

Post-War Reconstruction and Development Unit (PRDU)

The PRDU is based at the University of York (UK) and engages in research and practical work on post-war reconstruction. Particular emphasis on role of NGOs and the social dimension of democratic reconstruction.

SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute)

A well-established international peace studies institute.  Focus on global militarism with considerable material provided on line.

Truth and Reconciliation Commission

Official site of South Africa’s pathbreaking Truth and Reconciliation Commission set up in 1995 to assist the democratisation process in that country. A comprehensive site with extensive archive of news reports.

UNDP (United Nations Development Programme)

As well as programmes on poverty, gender and the environment the UNDP runs a stream on Democratisation and Governance with useful research links.

United Nations High Commission for Human Rights

Currently led by Mary Robinson, the UN human rights body has been active in setting standards for democratic rights across the world. Projects and policy discussions in relation to all major conflict situations.

Gender Equality, Development and Peace

Women 2000 (Beijing+5) conference on the UN seeking to 'mainstream' gender, peace and development issues.

World Bank Post-Conflict Reconstruction Unit

According to the World Bank its post-conflict reconstruction unit "eases the transition to sustainable peace and supports socio-economic development in conflict-affected countries". Includes Concepts, Resources, Policies and Related Links.

Worlds Apart (Britannica)

Typical Encyclopaedia Britannica offering on the WWW. Scores with its dynamic, clickable map-based overview of twelve ‘trouble-spots’ worldwide. Commentary not too analytical.
