Maynooth Students for Charity are about to embark on their 20th cycle on Friday 30th March at 6.30am and this year hopes to be bigger and better than ever. Over the years students and friends of the NUI Maynooth group have raised the modern day equivalent of €1 million for worthy charities with a special interest in supporting children by cycling from Maynooth to Galway and back. Many fundraising events take place before and during the weekend of the cycle and this year is no different with some of the 'Baywatch-esque' members of the group taking a dip in the Galway Coast on Saturday 31 March to raise a little more for the charity!
This year 80 cyclists along with support crew and over 80 collectors, will make the 242 mile return journey in aid of Stepping Stones School for Children in nearby Kilcloon, Co Meath. Stepping Stones provides services for children with autism from a wide catchment area. The school was established in 2002 and funded by a group of parents who wanted to provide appropriate education for their children through the Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) model of education. The school is a joyful place and the pupils are happy, boisterous, mischievous and, above all, wonderful children who happen to face significant developmental challenges. It is the aim of the cycle this year to raise as much money as possible to help the school build a new playground for the children where the laughter and fun can continue.
With many people returning year after year to be involved in this event it has become much more than a normal fundraising drive. This cycle is about combining lifelong friendships from college days in Maynooth with making a difference to many children's lives across Ireland.
If you can help us in any way it would be greatly appreciated from a crate of drinks to a spot prize to coming along the road. Your contribution big or small makes a difference. For queries please contact Shane on 087-9583983 or president@galwaycycle.ie.
