Ryder Cup 2006 will live in the sporting memories of millions for many, many years because of the emotion-charged victory of the European Team over the United States of America. To mark that special occasion, the President of the National University of Ireland Maynooth (NUI Maynooth), Professor John Hughes, announced an exciting new Golf Scholarships Award Scheme to support and encourage exceptional student golfing talent in Ireland.

The pursuit of excellence drives the NUI Maynooth team, and one exceptional person of vision who inspired all in the golfing arena was the late and great Paddy Harrington senior. The encouragement, time and energy that Paddy gave to aspiring young golfers, including his own sons, is legendary and exemplary. Fittingly, in his honour, the Golf Scholarships Award Scheme has been named “The Paddy Harrington Golf Scholarships”.

With very generous assistance from Carton House, the Golfing Union of Ireland, the Irish Ladies Golf Union, and our main sponsor, The Oceanico Group, two scholarships have already been awarded for 2006/7 to James Monaghan of the Island Golf Club and Bernard Quigley of Birr Golf Club, and a further nine Scholarships will be awarded for the academic year 2007/8.

These world-class scholarships offer a highly-structured golf programme which includes the use of the two championship golf courses The Montgomery and The O’Meara in the Carton House Estate. The most up-to-date training and technical facilities at the GUI Golf Academy will be provided to the scholars under the direction and guidance of the National Coach, which will include fitness training, sports psychology, health and nutrition, golf course management, performance analysis and lifestyle management. In addition, the excellent sports facilities in NUI Maynooth are fully available to participants, together with the attractive benefit of warm winter-training on the Oceanico Group’s world-famous golf courses on Portugal’s sunny Algarve. These are exceptional scholarships indeed, for exceptional young golfers.

The team in NUI Maynooth believes strongly in providing a holistic life-experience for students. This includes a powerful but personal academic experience, and involvement in diverse student activities to broaden the mind and deepen the understanding. The University has a superb range of courses on offer in the Arts, Sciences, Engineering and Business and has a very highly-regarded academic staff, many of whom are national leaders in their chosen field. Bursaries may be provided for tuition fees, books, board and lodging, competition entry fees and expenses, all strictly in accordance with the Rules of Amateur Status.

The Paddy Harrington Golf Scholarships will undoubtedly attract the cream of young golfing talent to become some of the most sought-after and prestigious in Europe. NUI Maynooth wishes to acknowledge with thanks the tremendous support received to date from all its sponsors and donors, some of whom wish to remain anonymous. The University wishes to thank them all especially the K Club and the Smurfit Kappa European Open for facilitating this launch at such a special time and in the presence of so many international golfing stars.

“I know that my father would be delighted with the excellent progress made to date with these scholarships which will greatly benefit Irish golf in the years ahead. I wish to thank all those involved, in particular the sponsors and benefactors for their generosity in financially assisting NUI Maynooth with the implementation of this scheme.

I wish all the scholarship students the very best for their future’s in golf.”

Padraig Harrington

“When I announced the exciting new Paddy Harrington Golf Scholarships Scheme for talented undergraduates a year ago, my hope was that the golf talent would blossom and grow. It gives me great pleasure to see this now coming to fruition.”
