Statuarys

In this group we have two further examples of the art of the Penal Times - the Penal Madonna on which the date 1517 is hidden on the base, and the wooden statue of Christ. The latter represents Christ on Calvary - the only illustration of this theme in the collection and one of very few in the country. A striking carving with finely carved head, it shows Christ seated alone on Calvary. It really forms part of the crucifixial group of exhibits, fitting in with the sequence of the Passion and leading up as it were to the final scene of the Crucifixion portrayed by the crucifixes, calvaries, the Ecce Homo (with the cameos) and the Holy Face (with the sculptured stones). One of the most prized exhibits was the magnificent gift of the Empress of Austria - the silver statue of St. George wrestling with the dragon. However this prized possession is now housed elsewhere in the College.
