Publications

The following is a list of publications which contain alot of the material on this site but give much more detail on the artefacts and scientific instrumentation. One book in particular covers the life of Prof. Nicholas Callan, whose work forms the main focus of the museum.
All publications are available from the College bookshop.

Nicholas Callan
Prof. of Natural Philosophy
St. Patrick's College, Maynooth
1799-1864

In this work by a successor to the physics chair at Maynooth, the story of Callan's life is told against the background of his times with copious notes on his teachers, colleagues and pupils. This "quaint old saint and savant", was the subject of countless stories, some of which are reproduced here and have point for our age.

St. Patrick's College, Maynooth,
Museum of Ecclesiology
A catalogue of ecclesiastical items spanning two centuries of the College history
Reflecting the deep cultural, ecclesiastical and scientific history of Maynooth College, the Museum houses a unique collection of exhibits of widely varying antiquity - vestments, rosaries, crucifixes, chalices etc.

The Scientific Apparatus of Nicholas Callan & other Historic Instruments
by Charles Mollan and John Upton
This catalogue is more than a description of the items in the collection. It also places them in their context in the history and development of scientific instruments, especially those of the 18th and 19th C when many of the major scientific discoveries occurred. Maynooth has an historic place in this story, and its collection is a valuable resource for the demonstration of the importance of scientific instruments in teaching and in expanding our knowledge of scientific discovery.
