A group of Penal Crosses dating from 1535 to 1823, when Ireland was emerging from Penal restrictions, is to be found in the museum. They are crudely made wooden crucifixes with the symbols of the Passion together with the cock-and-pot motif. This motif is very common and appears on nearly every member of the group. The largest - the Thom Frel cross - is dated 1823 and is the only one with an inscription, except one other which simply has the word "pray" inscribed. The cross arms are remarkably short in every case. The late Tomas Cardinal O Fiaich chose a penal cross for his pectoral cross.
