Defining 'mission  history'

For the purposes of this mission history project at Maynooth, the term ‘missionary’ is understood as embracing religious congregations, lay organisations, and individuals who were not formally affiliated to a specific organisation, of all Christian denominations, which meet any of the following criteria:
  • had houses or offices in Ireland
  • were founded by an Irish person(s)
  • had significant Irish-born membership
  • were founded and / or funded from Ireland.
Geographical coverage can range from quite local (missions within Ireland) to the furthest reaches internationally. Chronologically, the focus of interest is from the early eighteenth century through to the present day, but that does not rule our earlier periods. Ireland itself was officially mission territory, as defined by Propaganda Fide, the Congregation for the Propagation for the Faith in the nineteenth century, while a significant number of Protestant evangelical groups focused on Ireland for the purposes of mission.
