Campus Guide


All these directions start from one or other end of the footbridge joining the North and South Campuses:

  • The North Campus is often called the New Campus (because it contains nearly all the new buildings). Start from the road end of the footbridge.
  • The South Campus is often called the Old Campus (because it contains mostly old buildings). Start from the statue end of the footbridge.

Arts Building:

The Arts Building

Located on the North Campus; from the footbridge (road end), cross the road and walk straight ahead along the path leaving the two-storey Science Building on your left. Beyond it, also on your left, you come to the single-storey Arts Building. Continue along the side to reach its main entrance. When you have passed through the main entrance, the departments of Media Studies, Spanish, Ancient Classics, Philosophy, English, Nua-Ghaeilge, and Old and Middle Irish are to the left; the departments of French and German are on the second corridor to the right, along with the Language Centre, the Mature Students Officer, and the Academic Counsellor. There are classhalls along the first corridor to the right.

Aula Maxima:The Aula Maxima

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead. The first large rectangular building that you come to on your left is the Aula Maxima. Continue along the side and turn left to reach its main entrance.

 

 


 

Auxilia Building:

Located on the North Campus; from the footbridge (road end) walk straight ahead to the John Hume Building. Enter the building and walk across the lobby to exit by the rear door. Walk straight ahead out of this door, passing Rye Hall on your left. Continue past the Hamilton Institute entrance beside Rye Hall. The building ahead of you, diagonally off to the right, is Auxilia Building.

Biosciences and Electronic Engineering Building:

Biosciences and Electronic Engineering BuildingLocated on the North Campus; from the footbridge (road end), cross the road and walk straight ahead along the path leaving the two-storey Science Building on your left. Beyond it, also on your left, you come to the single-storey Arts Building. Walk through the Arts Building to exit by the rear door. Taking the path diagonally to the right, the orange building on the right-hand-side is the Engineering Building.

Callan Building:

The Callan Building

Located on the North Campus. It contains the Biology and Computer Science departments, and a bank of open access PCs in the foyer. From the footbridge (road end), cross the road and turn left to take the path going diagonally across the open ground. Callan Building is one in front, with the curved end on the left. The main entrance is mid-way along the side facing you. Do not confuse Callan Building with Callan Hall which is on the South Campus.

Callan Hall:

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead leaving the Aula Maxima on your left until you enter St Joseph’s Square. Turn left down the centre of the square. In front of you, between the two archways, is a door. Go through the door, and on the right is an entrance to the back of Callan Hall. Do not confuse Callan Hall with Callan Building which is on the North Campus.

College Chapel:

College Chapel

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead leaving the Aula Maxima on your left until you enter St Joseph’s Square. Midway across the top of the square, go through the President's Arch on your right, into St. Patrick's House. Turning right, follow the corridor around until you reach the Chapel on your right-hand-side.

 

 

 

 

Columba Centre:

Columba CentreLocated on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead, passing the Library on your right. The next building that you come to on your right is the Columba Centre.

 

 

 

 

 

Computer Centre:

The Computer Centre Teaching LabsLocated on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end) walk ahead and bear left (leaving the Aula Maxima on your right). The entrance to the Computer Centre is in the middle of the range of singlestorey buildings on your left. There are PCs available for student use in Personal Access Computer Rooms (PACRs) in the Arts Building and in Callan Building on the North Campus, as well as in other locations.

Crèche:

CrècheLocated on the North Campus; from the footbridge (road end) walk straight ahead to the John Hume Building. Enter the building and walk across the lobby to exit by the rear door. Turning diagonally to the left, follow the path leading to Rye Hall. The Crèche is located to the left (north-west) side of this building.

 

 

 

Dunboyne House:

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead leaving the Aula Maxima on your left until you enter St Joseph’s Square. Midway across the square, stop and turn left with the President's Arch behind you. Part of the range of the buildings to the right is Dunboyne House. Take the path going diagonally across the square to the right, leading to the door halfway along the range of buildings on your right. Once through the door, turn right and you are in Dunboyne House. (The part of the building to the left of the entrance door is Humanity House.)

 

 

Education House: Education House

One of the buildings on the North Campus; from the footbridge (road end) cross the road and immediately turn right. The second building on the left is Education House.

Footbridge:

crosses the Kilcock Road and joins the North and South Campus. The South Campus end is outside the Library, next to the statue of Pope John-Paul II; the North Campus end is at the crossing on the perimeter road.

 

 

Humanity House:

Humanity HouseLocated on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead leaving the Aula Maxima on your left until you enter St Joseph’s Square. Midway across the square, stop and turn left with the President's Arch behind you. Part of the range of the buildings to the right is Humanity House. Take the path going diagonally across the square to the right, leading to the door halfway along the range of buildings on your right. Once through the door, turn left and you are in Humanity House. (The part of the building to the right of the entrance door is Dunboyne House.) At the end of the corridor is the main Registrar’s Office; upstairs is the International Students’ Office. There is also an entrance to Humanity House from the other side of the building.

 

 

John Hume Building:

The John Hume Building

Located on the North Campus; from the footbridge (road end), cross the road and walk straight ahead for 100 metres. The large building on the right, opposite the Arts Building, is the John Hume Building. This contains lecture halls and tutorial rooms, and the Psychology Department. The University Bookshop is on the ground floor.

John Paul II Library:

John Paul II LibraryLocated on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), the building immediately on the right is the Library.

Loftus Hall:

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead, leaving the Aula Maxima on your left and continue across the top of St Joseph’s Square. As you leave the square, you will come to a crossroad, with Riverstown Lodge away to your left, Logic House in front of you through an an arched entrance and the path to Loftus Hall to your right. Taking this path to the right, continue straight ahead past the Science Museum. The building straight in front of you is Loftus Hall.

Lecture Halls:
Upper Loftus (located upstairs), Middle Loftus (ground floor, to the right),
Lower Loftus (ground floor, to the left).

 

Logic House:

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead, leaving the Aula Maxima on your left and continue across the top of St Joseph’s Square. As you leave the square you will see an arched entrance in the wall in front. Go through this, and the large building ahead is Logic House. Bear right and midway along the side is the main entrance. The departments of Mathematics and Music are in this building.

New House:

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead leaving the Aula Maxima on your left until you enter St Joseph’s Square. Take a direct left upon entering the square. The building on your left-hand-side is New House. The entrance is midway down the building.

 

 

Physics Hall:

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead leaving the Aula Maxima on your left until you enter St Joseph’s Square. Turn left down the centre of the square. In front of you, there are two archways - Physics Hall is under the archway to the left, on the right-hand-side.

Postroom (South Campus):

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead, leaving the Aula Maxima on your left and continue across the top of St Joseph’s Square. As you leave the square turn sharp left. After the Swimming Pool building, pass by the gap leading to Rhetoric House. You will then pass by the Theology Office on your right; the building facing this is the Postroom. (Note: there is also a Postroom on the North Campus in the John Hume Building.

President's Arch:

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead leaving the Aula Maxima on your left until you enter St Joseph’s Square. Midway across the top of the square, the very large wooden doorway in the centre of the frontage on your right is known as the President’s Arch.

 

 

Pugin Hall:

Pugin HallLocated on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead leaving the Aula Maxima on your left until you enter St Joseph’s Square. Midway across the top of the square, go through the President's Arch on your right, into St. Patrick's House. Turning left, follow the corridor straight ahead, then taking the turn to the right. Pugin Hall is the first hall you will come to, located on the left-hand-side.

 

 

 

Renehan Hall:

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead leaving the Aula Maxima on your left until you enter St Joseph’s Square. Midway across the top of the square, go through the President's Arch on your right, into St. Patrick's House. Turning left, follow the corridor straight ahead, then taking the turn to the right. Passing Pugin Hall on your left, Renehan Hall is the next hall you will come to, also on your left-hand-side.

Rhetoric House:

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead, leaving the Aula Maxima on your left and continue across the top of St Joseph’s Square. As you leave the square turn sharp left. After the Swimming Pool building, turn right through the gap and in front is the entrance to the three-storey Rhetoric House. It contains the departments of Economics, Geography, and History.

River Apartments:

River ApartmentsLocated on the North Campus; from the footbridge (road end) walk straight ahead to the John Hume Building. Enter the building and walk across the lobby to exit by the rear door. Continue straight ahead along the path, leaving Rye Hall on your left-hand-side. Reaching the road, the apartments directly in front of you are the Village Apartments; the apartments in the distance, diagonally off to your left, are the River Apartments.

Riverstown Hall:

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead, leaving the Aula Maxima on your left and continue across the top of St Joseph’s Square. As you leave the square turn sharp left and continue until you come to the building set back on the right with a patch of grass in front. This is Riverstown Lodge. Continuing past this building, Riverstown Hall is the next adjoining building on the right-hand-side.

Riverstown Lodge:

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead, leaving the Aula Maxima on your left and continue across the top of St Joseph’s Square. As you leave the square turn sharp left and continue until you come to the building set back on the right with a patch of grass in front. This is Riverstown Lodge and contains a number of administrative offices, including that of the university’s President. It has several entrances. The Accounts Office is through the door on the left.

 

 

Russell Library:

Russell LibraryLocated on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead leaving the Aula Maxima on your left until you enter St Joseph’s Square. Midway across the top of the square, go through the President's Arch on your right, into St. Patrick's House. Taking the left-hand turn, continue past Pugin Hall and Renehan Hall until you reach a small corridor on your left leading to Loftus Hall. Midway up this corridor on the right is Russell Library.

 

 

 

Rye Hall:

Rye Hall

Located on the North Campus; from the footbridge (road end) walk straight ahead to the John Hume Building. Enter the building and walk across the lobby to exit by the rear door. Rye Hall is the large building diagonally off to the left.

St. Anne's Building:

St. Anne's BuildingOne of the buildings on the North Campus; from the footbridge (road end), cross the road and immediately turn right. The first building is St Anne’s.

St. Catherine's Building:

St. Catherine's BuildingLocated on the North Campus; from the footbridge (road end) walk straight ahead towards the John Hume Building, taking the path to the right just in front of it. The Student Services Centre is now directly in front of you. Taking another right just before the Student Services Centre, St. Catherine's is now the building facing you at the end of this path.

 

 

 

St. Joseph's Square:

The main square on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end) walk straight ahead until you come to the square laid out in flower beds – this is St Joseph’s Square.

St. Joseph's Oratory:

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead. The first large rectangular building that you come to on your left is the Aula Maxima. Continue along the side and turn left. From here, with the entrance to the Aula on your left, and New House on your right, continue straight ahead. The section of the building on your right judt after New House is St. Joseph's Oratory.

 

St. Mary's House:

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead leaving the Aula Maxima on your left until you enter St Joseph’s Square. Midway across the top of the square, go through the President’s Arch to enter St. Patrick's House. Across the courtyard, the wing of the building directly opposite you is known as St. Mary's House.

 

St. Patrick's House:

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead leaving the Aula Maxima on your left until you enter St Joseph’s Square. Midway across the top of the square, go through the President’s Arch to enter St. Patrick's House.

Science Museum:

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead, leaving the Aula Maxima on your left and continue across the top of St Joseph’s Square. As you leave the square, you will come to a crossroad, with Riverstown Lodge away to your left, Logic House in front of you through an an arched entrance and the path to Loftus Hall to your right. Turn right, heading towards Loftus Hall. Midway down this path on your right-hand-side is the Science Museum.

 

 

Sports Complex:

NUIM Fitness CentreLocated on the North Campus; from the footbridge (road end), cross the road and walk straight ahead along the path leaving the two-storey Science Building on your left. Beyond it, also on your left, you come to the single-storey Arts Building. Walk through the Arts Building to exit by the rear door. Taking the path diagonally to the right, continue straight ahead to reach the building housing the Sports Complex, as well as the Student Canteen.

Stoyte House:

Located on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead leaving the Aula Maxima on your left until you enter St Joseph’s Square. Turn left down the centre of the square. The part of St. Joseph's square directly facing you is Stoyte House, housing Callan Hall, Physics Hall and Long Corridor.

 

 

Student Canteen:

Canteen Located on the North Campus; from the footbridge (road end), cross the road and walk straight ahead along the path leaving the two-storey Science Building on your left. Beyond it, also on your left, you come to the single-storey Arts Building. Walk through the Arts Building to exit by the rear door. Taking the path diagonally to the right, continue straight ahead to reach the building housing the Student Cantenn, as well as the Sports Complex.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Student Services Centre:

Student Services CentreLocated on the North Campus; from the footbridge (road end) walk straight ahead to the John Hume Building. Enter the building and walk across the lobby to exit by the rear door. Taking the path diagonally to your right, the building straight in front of you is the Student Services Centre.

Students' Union:

Students' UnionOne of the buildings on the North Campus; from the footbridge (road end), turn left and follow the path around the edge of the campus. The first building you will come to on your left-hand-side is the Students' Union Building.

 

 

 

 

 

Swimming Pool:

Swimming PoolLocated on the South Campus; from the footbridge (statue end), walk straight ahead, leaving the Aula Maxima on your left and continue across the top of St Joseph’s Square. As you leave the square turn sharp left. The first building on the right-hand-side is the Swimming Pool building.

 

 

 

 

Village Apartments:

Village Apartments Located on the North Campus; from the footbridge (road end) walk straight ahead to the John Hume Building. Enter the building and walk across the lobby to exit by the rear door. Continue straight ahead along the path, leaving Rye Hall on your left-hand-side. Reaching the road, the apartments directly in front of you are the Village Apartments.

 

 

 

Toilets:

Found at the following locations on North Campus:

  • in the Arts Building along the corridor to the right inside the main entrance;
  • in the John Hume Building to the left inside the main entrance;
  • in the entrance hall of the Science Building near the entrance to the Student Restaurant;
  • in the Students’ Union Building.

on South Campus:

  • in the Library, at every level on the main staircase;
  • up the steps from the back entrance to Callan Hall;
  • in the entrance of the Aula Maxima (not always open).
