Chinese 1 (LC1C) & Chinese 2 (LC2C)

    24 formal contact hours (Lectures) and 24 hours tutorial.

  • Module objectives / Learning Outcomes:

  • After completing this module, students are expected to:
  1. Identify and produce the basic sounds of Pinyin (Chinese Phonetic Alphabet, CPA);
  2. Recognize basic strokes and stroke order of Chinese characters;
  3. Master (read and write) 75 simplified Chinese characters and 150 Chinese words related to daily life and schools;
  4. Understand simple greetings and methods of addressing people;
  5. Be able to introduce themselves or make themselves understood by others using limited, simple vocabulary.
  6. Be able to give basic information about themselves or others using simple vocabulary.

Module content

  • Reading and writing skills are taught with an emphasis on structure and principles to provide a solid foundation of core grammar. Practical speaking and listening skills will be taught through audio materials and conversation classes with experienced native speakers.

Assessment

  • One Continuous Assessment (25%); One Oral/Aural Exam (25%); One Final Written (50%)

     

  • Penalties: No late submission accepted

  • After completing this module, students are expected to:
  1. Be able to recognize Pinyin and use Pinyin to locate characters with the help of dictionaries;
  2. Master (read and write) a further 75 simplified characters and 150 Chinese words;
  3. Comprehend simple and basic language situations that are closely related to personal or everyday life;
  4. Be able to understand limited and brief expressions related to personal and daily life;
  5. Be able to repeat and recite words and sentences learned. Be able to talk about simple topics related to daily life.
  6.  Be able to provide very brief written answers to relevant questions using simple, basic vocabulary.
