Twenty-four hours per week. Daily sessions take place from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., and there are two late afternoon sessions (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.). Students are expected to undertake at least 15 hours of individual study each week.
The four language skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) are systematically covered, and students are also taught how to cite and reference secondary material, take notes in lectures, write structured academic essays, develop reading strategies for academic texts and develop communication skills for discussion and presentations. A number of sessions are devoted to familiarisation with Irish university culture.
At the end of the programme, students are required to sit an examination which will test their level in the four skills. The pass mark is 6.0 for prospective undergraduate students and 6.5 for prospective postgraduate students.
NB Students must pass the examination in order to proceed with their chosen course.
