Finance is a branch of economics concerned with resource allocation as well as resource management and investment. Finance deals with the concepts of time, money and risk and how they are interrelated.Why study Finance in Maynooth?

The finance group within the Department of Economics Finance and Accounting is one of the leading groups in Ireland. Staffs have a strong research base with recent work in Asset Allocation, Financial Markets Contagion, Corporate Finance, Hedge Funds, Behavioural Finance and Initial Public Offerings.

The Department prides itself with high quality teaching and personal attention to students. We offer a large number of undergraduate degree programmes in Finance:  B.A. in Finance  MH401, B.A. in International Finance and Economics MH401, B.A. in Accounting and Finance MH403, Major/Minor degree with a Major in Finance. All those programs provide a strong foundation in Finance. They prepare students for a variety of careers in the private and public sectors such as the International Financial Services Sector, Retail and Investment Banking, Stockbroking and Financial Market Research. Typical career options include Financial Analyst, Economic Analyst, Stockbroker, Accountant, Tax Consultant, Treasury Consultant, Management Consultant and Teacher.

Students at Maynooth University can take Finance as an Arts subject as part of a Joint Honours degree. Entry is through the BA degree (MH101) on the CAO application form.  

Finance is the lifeblood that fuels the economy. The financial sector is made up of lenders and borrowers, big investors and small savers, risk lovers and risk haters, innovators and regulators. Currencies rise and fall, stock markets boom and bust, property values soar and crash, interest rates fluctuate. All of this is supported by the intricate workings of our financial systems.

As a student of Finance you will learn how the financial system works from the perspective of the borrower and of the lender, how assets are traded, how international markets are linked, how governments try to control financial markets and how financial markets respond. You will learn how to use analytical tools – including mathematics, deductive logic and applied statistics – to examine problems and devise logical solutions. Students are not required to have any previous knowledge of Finance only an interest in how the financial sector and the economy work and a desire to know more.
