Module Objective: To give an idea of the importance of proof and problem solving.
The course will cover the following topics: Problem solving – analysis of mathematical behavior. Experimentation. Heuristics. Variation, generalisation and specialisation. Exploiting symmetry. Strategy and control. Proof – Mathematical notation. Basic notions from formal logic. Nature of proof. Counterexamples. Techniques of proof, for example induction and proof by contradiction. Proof validation. Consideration of how these topics could be taught in a second level classroom.
