Staff Support
Most teaching staff in Maynooth will have students supported by MAP in their class. MAP students include students with disabilities, mature students, students from the travelling community and students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds. This section contains advice on best practice in inclusively teaching, assessing and supporting a diverse range of students at Maynooth. MAP stresses the importance of students being academically and practically prepared for the commitment to a three or four year course. In some cases staff may come across MAP students who are struggling with their studies.
Every academic department has a MAP Academic Advisor who is a link between the department and MAP on academic issues that students are experiencing.

"I have been the MAP Academic Advisor for the Department of Computer Science since the inception of the support. I do not see this support as giving extra to a student but I feel it is about leveling the playing pitch for all students so that they have equal opportunities within the university.
I have seen on countless occasions the benefits of MAP Academic Advisors to students. These benefits include having a point of contact within each department offering them a safe space to discuss their issues and seek subject-specific supports, and also directing them to other appropriate university supports.
I feel a real sense of purpose in this role as it allows me to get to know students outside of lectures; sometimes all these students need is a supporting person to talk to. The role positions me as a central point of contact for students who may need to communicate with multiple lecturers within the department.
