Report to be launched in Monaghan
Friday 16 November 2001
This six-month research project, funded by the Centre for Cross Border Studies, aims to provide a solid basis for future local history collaboration on an all-Ireland basis. While local history is now well established as a university discipline, it is the community-based local society that remains the backbone of the movement. In rural, urban and village settings, local history studies can cross many divides, improving community relations and fostering respect for cultural difference. However, despite widespread acknowledgement of its importance, there has been little formal support to date, especially in the Republic.

This six-month research project, funded by the Centre for Cross Border Studies, aims to provide a solid basis for future local history collaboration on an all-Ireland basis.

The project is based here in the Department of Modern History, NUI Maynooth, but has many links north and south including:

Questionnaire survey:
One of our ‘planned outcomes’ is the creation of an all-island database of local history societies, both affiliated and non-affiliated (to FULS and FLHS), and the production of the first ever register (in both on-line and printed format) of local history societies currently active in Ireland.

Stage I of the research involves contacting all local history societies in Ireland, north and south, those affiliated to FULS or FLHS and those with no affiliation to any federation or larger group. To date, over 100 circulars have been returned from all parts of the island, and are currently being analysed. This represents the single most comprehensive survey of the activities and linkages of local history societies on the island ever undertaken, and will be of tremendous importance in planning for the future.

Make sure you are included!
If your group has not been circulated by Maeve Mulryan Moloney yet, please make contact immediately. This is an ongoing project, and it is crucial that we make contact with as many societies as possible.
Final published report to be launched at the all-Ireland local history conference planned for Monaghan,
16 November 2001.
