COURSE
SYLLABUS
Aims:
-
To heighten
students’ awareness and deepen their understanding of fundamental aspects
of the methodology of local history as an academic field of study.
-
To cultivate
in students a critical analytical approach to primary and secondary historical
material and an ability to discriminate between local history which is
competently researched and written and that which is not.

To provide
students with guidance on an individual basis on the research and presentation
of local history in a competent manner and one which conforms with academic
standards and conventions.

To acquaint
students with the principal sources for Irish local history, the major
repositories, and means by which they might gain access to these sources.
Content:
-
Section
I: An introduction to academic and community-based local history in Ireland;
its inter-disciplinary nature; comparative traditions in other country(s);
contemporary developments and challenges in the field of local history

Section
II: An introduction to primary and secondary sources; survey of the principal
primary sources for local history in Ireland; guidelines for critical appraisal
of sources; guidance on location and consultation of selected major sources

Section
III: Presenting local history: writing conventions (I.H.S.); oral and visual
presentations; field work.
Assessment:
This
course is assessed by means of a research project, on a topic to be decided
in conjunction with the course lecturer and approved by the Department
of Modern History. It will be presented to an acceptable academic standard,
final word count to be c.10,000 words. 80% minimum attendance is required.
Course
structure:
The
course may be taught by weekly sessions of two or three hours each throughout
one academic year, or in an intensive summer school or by some intermediate
combination. There will be x75 hours tuition in total, including conducted
research visits, fieldtrips and individual direction.
EligibilityMust
be aged 23 years+ and hold an interest in local history. No formal educational
standard is required.

Certificate course in Local History may be considered as

a stand-alone
university-level (pre-degree) qualification

x 15 credits
towards a BA (Local and Community Studies) offered by NUIM in both Kilkenny
and Maynooth

x 15 ECTS
credits (European Credit Transfer System)

for students
whose primary degree is not history, but who are keen to pursue further
study in local history (for example, at MA level) the certificate course
provides an excellent grounding in local history sources and methodology.
Course
fee: The fee (for 2001-2002) is £600,
payable at course enrolment, which covers cost of tuition and class materials.
