This Conference and associated workshops aims:

  • to inform (clergy, parishioners, religious and other concerned persons) of current statutory requirements as they apply to church buildings (including religious houses); the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act 1999, and the Architectural Conservation Guidelines (produced by Dúchas / the Heritage Council), for the management of churches (interior, exterior and surrounds) are of urgent interest.
  • to foster an understanding of the principles of conservation within the context of liturgical requirements
  • to encourage local history scholarship focused around the parish community and local church heritage.
The conference and associated workshops will be of particular interest to:
  • members of historic churches advisory committees
  • parish groups / members of church vestries architects, planners, conservators
  • local historians, archivists, liturgists
  • clergy and religious with responsibility for church buildings
  • members of religious communities
  • and indeed all with an interest in sacred art, architecture, liturgy and the history of their local church
The organising committee and speakers are drawn from different Christian denominations; the programme is intended to address the concerns which are common to all, in as inclusive a manner as possible.

Publishers have been invited to set up book displays, to provide participants with an idea of the resources currently available.
