21 November 2001). This workshop opens with a session on identifying architectural
styles (Dr. John Gilmartin, NCAD), followed by explorations on how to present
the results of your research in a professional and appropriate manner:
as part of a planning application, article for a scholarly journal, booklet,
parish newsletter, web site, poster display or by other means.
All welcome
- parishioners, architects, planners, clergy, religious, and all with
an interest in sacred art, architecture, liturgy and the history of their
local church.

This Conference
and associated workshops aims:

to increase awareness
of our rich church heritage: its architecture, art and history, created
as sacred space for worship and as the focus of a local faith community
-
to inform (clergy,
parishioners, religious and other concerned persons) of current statutory
requirements as they apply to church buildings (including religious houses);
the Local Government (Planning and Development) Act 1999, and the Architectural
Conservation Guidelines (produced by Dúchas / the Heritage Council),
for the management of churches (interior, exterior and surrounds) are of
urgent interest.

to foster an understanding
of the principles of conservation within the context of liturgical requirements
-
to encourage local
history scholarship focused around the parish community and local church
heritage.

The organising committee
and speakers are drawn from different Christian denominations; the programme
is intended to address the concerns which are common to all, in as inclusive
a manner as possible.
Publishers have
been invited to set up book displays, to provide participants with an idea
of the resources currently available.
