Dr Rose Malone is a lecturer in the Education Departemnt and course leader for the Education Doctorate (EdD) jointly with Dr Anne B Ryan, Department of Adult and Community Education. Rose has been a member of the Education Department in NUI, Maynooth since November 1999. Prior to that she co-ordinated curriculum projects (on Poverty and Education (1997-99) and on Integrated Science(1982-89)) in the CDVEC Curriculum Development Unit and was Education/Research Officer for the Teachers’ Union of Ireland (1993-97). She has lectured in the Education Departments of NUI Galway (1989-91) and the National College of Art and Design (1991-93) and has been a classroom teacher with CDVEC (1971-1982).

She contributes to the following courses:

  • PGDE (modules on Teacher as Critically Reflective Practitioner (1), Curriculum Studies)
  • PGDEL (contribution to modules The Person: Human and Professional; Research Methodologies)
  • Masters’ in Education (shared module with Dr. Anne Lodge Equality and Diversity in Education, thesis supervision)
  • Masters’ in Education (School Leadership) (shared module with Dr. Anne Lodge Equality and Diversity in Education, thesis supervision)
  • Education Doctorate (contribution to modules Thinking-theory and practice: Critical Theories of Education and Adult Education; Research Modalities: Advanced Research Methods (using mixed methods, ethnography); Literature review workshops, writing workshops, thesis supervision)
  • PhD (summer and autumn schools, literature review workshops, writing workshops, thesis supervision)

Current research interests include:

  • Prevention of early school-leaving, with particular reference to the role of curriculum innovation
  • Gender equality in education
  • Assessment modes and techniques to support learning
  • Active learning methods to support education for social justice
  • Application of the work of Pierre Bourdieu in second-level education
  • Education and migration
  • Teaching and learning in science and mathematics


Current research

  • Evaluation of GIMMS (Gender, Innovation and Mentoring in Mathematics and Science Education) based in University of Limerick
  • Teachers’ informal learning networks with North Tipperary Vocational Education Committee
  • Care and Education with Dr Anne Lodge and colleagues in St Patrick’s College, Drumcondra
