Gerry Jeffers joined the Department as a Lecturer in 'Innovation and Development in Schools' in September 2000.

Gerry teaches on the following programmes offered by the Department:

  • Master of Education (School Leadership)
  • Master of Education
  • Post Graduate Diploma in School Guidance and Counselling (PGDGC)
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Educational Management (PGDEM)
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Educational Leadership (PGDEL – Toraíocht)
  • Doctorate in Education

He was also a member of the TL21 project team.

Prior to joining the Department, Gerry was National Co-ordinator of the Transition Year Curriculum Support Service. He has taught in VEC schools in Dublin and Kilkenny and worked as a guidance counsellor and deputy principal. He also taught for two years in a school in Kenya, East Africa.

Gerry has written and contributed to school textbooks in the areas of Work Experience, Media Studies, Civic, Social and Political Education (CSPE) and English. He has also been involved in the development of teaching and learning resources, including videos, on Work Experience, Portfolio Assessment, Minicompany, European awareness and Transition Year. His research interests include: Transition Year and other curricular innovations, School Leadership, Change and innovation, Communication within schools, Teacher motivation and professional development, Media Education,  Development Education and Citizenship Education.

Gerry completed a Ph.D. thesis on "Innovation and Resistance in Irish Schooling: The Case of Transition Year" in 2008.

He co-edited, with Dr Una O'Connor of the University of Ulster at Coleraine, a book entitled Education for Citizenship and Diversity in Irish contexts  which is published by the Institute of Public Administration http://www.ipa.ie/?id=63&categoryID=2&pubID=669&sc=1 Former President of Ireland, Mary Robinson, launched the book in February 2009.

He is currently engaged in researching practices relating to Development Education in schools with funding from Irish Aid. This will include a written report and a DVD.

In April 2007, a research report undertaken for and funded by the Department of Education and Science on 'Attitudes to Transition Year' was completed. A summary of the report along with the report on CD-ROM is available on request.
