Dr. Anne Lodge is a Senior Lecturer in the Education Department. She is course leader for the Masters in Education and Ph.D. / M.A. programmes. She contributes to the following programmes offered by the Education Department:

  • Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)
  • Higher Diploma in Educational Management (HDEM)
  • Higher Diploma in School Guidance and Counselling
  • Master of Education
  • Master of Education (School Leadership)
  • Master of Education (School Guidance and Counselling)
  • Taught components of the Ph.D. and M.A. in Education programmes

She also contributes to the Education Doctorate programme jointly offered by the Adult Education Department and the Education Department.

Her teaching areas include Sociology of Education, Equality Issues in Education and Research Methods. She supervises research at Masters (M.Ed and M.Litt), Doctoral (Ed.D. and Ph.D.) and Post-doctoral levels.


Current research interests:

  • Equality and education, with a particular focus on:
    • Gender and sexuality
    • Inclusion and interculturism
    • Recognition of minority beliefs in a denominational school system
    • experiences of those with emotional and behavioural difficulties in mainstream schooling
  • Beginning teacher profiles, identities and motivations
  • Use of Audience Response Technology in teaching controversial topics
  • Tecaher identities and care-work


Current research:

The Future of Consecutive Post-Primary Teacher Education: An Assessment of the needs of pre-service and newly qualified teachers and the needs of the post-primary sector (2002 – 2007)
Collaborative study with Dr. Marie Clarke UCD and Dr. Michael Shevlin Trinity College Dublin.

National study to evaluate the effectiveness of the Incredible Years Parent, Teacher and Child Training Series in Ireland ('Incredible Years Ireland') 2007 - 2010.
Deputy Research Director (with special responsibility for managing all work/activity involving teachers and schools)

Valuing Visibility: an expoloration of how sexual orientation issues are recognised and addressed in post-primary schools
Collaborative research with GLEN (Gay Lesbian Education Network). January 2008 - November 2008. Funded by the Research and Development Committee, Department of Education and Science.
