Research and Development |
A core task for the education department has been the completion of a wide range of educational research and scholarship, and the development of students’ capacity to engage in research during their teaching careers. These research activities contribute to the fostering of educational discussion and debate in a variety of fora in Irish public life.
The research activity in the department spans a very wide diversity of topics. It includes original philosophical work, empirical investigations, action research, evaluations and consultancy. A variety of methodologies are employed by departmental staff in their research activities including quantitative research, qualitative interviewing, focus groups, documentary analysis, visual and audio-visual methods, ethnography, narrative and action research. Some areas of research that have come to be identified with the department include development education and education for citizenship, governance and educational policy-making, innovative classroom practice, educational leadership, the use of ICT in education, curriculum evaluation, social justice issues in education, educational counseling and guidance.
We are continually developing new research ideas with other departments and groups, including through our joint research with the Department of Adult and Community Education on themes including development education, migration and inclusive education, community education projects, e-learning and narrative research in education
