About NUI Maynooth

The John Hume Building

students sitting in front of the Hume BuildingThe John Hume Building was officially opened by President Mary McAleese on 23 April 2004. The state-of-the-art education and research centre at NUI Maynooth is dedicated to one of its former students, the Nobel Prize-winner, John Hume.

The €16 million structure marks the centrepiece of the University’s campus and includes lecture theatres, seminar rooms and teaching and research facilities for the University’s 6,000 students. Significantly it is also the culmination of a €100 million building programme, including student apartments, a Biosciences and Electronic Engineering Building, sports and student recreation facilities.

At the event President McAleese, stated “ This building which carries his name will continue to vindicate the role of education and in particular higher education as the engine-room of modern Ireland.”

The building houses seven lecture theatres; ranging in size from 75 to 450 seats, ten seminar rooms and teaching and research facilities for students and staff. NUI Maynooth’s Department of Psychology have relocated to the second floor. In addition, the National Institute for Regional and Spatial Analysis (NIRSA) and the National Centre for Geocomputation (NCG) are based on the Third Floor.

As well as a large boardroom on the top floor there is a service mall on the ground floor. Maynooth University Bookshop has relocated there from the South Campus, along with a Londis student shop, O’Brien’s Sandwich Bar with a seating area provided and a branch of AIB. With all these facilities it is fast becoming the hub of University life on the North Campus.
