Hamilton Institute Seminar

Tuesday, May 7, 2024 - 12:00 to 13:00
Hamilton Institute Seminar room (317), 3rd floor Eolas Building, North Campus

Virtual participation: Zoom details available here

Speaker: Professor Jennifer McKinley, Queen's University Belfast

Title: "Spatial Analytics for Geohealth"

Abstract: Human-environmental relations are explored through case study examples involving ground-based geological and geochemical data. Jennifer will present recent research which seeks to gain a greater understanding of the link between human health and our environment, the potential impacts of air and traffic pollution and the value of green space and nature-based solutions. The approaches presented acknowledge the compositional nature of the environmental data such as geochemistry data and will include case studies involving the use of compositional data analysis, including the use of log ratios and balances.

Biography: Jennifer McKinley is a Professor and Director of the Centre for GIS and Geomatics, in Geography, Queen’s University Belfast. Her research interests include the development and application of spatial analysis techniques, geostatistics and compositional data analysis in ground and remotely sensed earth processes, health and the environmental impacts from natural and anthropogenic sources, criminal and environmental forensics. Jennifer is the 2024 Krumbein Medallist, 2023 Distinguished Lecturer and Past President (2016-2020) of the International Association of Mathematical Geoscience (IAMG). Jennifer is a current Councillor of the International Union of Geosciences (IUGS 2020-2024) and Chair of the Governing Council of the IUGS Deep-time Digital Earth Initiative (DDE).
